Year 1/2

Hello and welcome to our class

We are a mixed year 1 and 2 class who love learning.
Our learning is cross curricular and is linked to our termly topic.
Our topic for the Spring Term is..

OUR WONDERFUL WORLD

Picture
The first half term is looking at our 'Wonderful World'  Our main focus will be learning about  Antarctica and the Arctic. We will then move on  in the second half  term to look at caring for our fragile world with a focus on plastics and their effects on our oceans.
English: Most of our learning is cross-curricular. Our English lessons are often based around a book related to our topic. This half term we will be focusing on a book called ''Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers and then the sequel 'Up and Down'.  We will learn how to write non - chronological reports about penguins and other polar animals, During the second half term we will be reading 'Somebody swallowed Stanley' by Sarah Roberts and writing our own versions describing the journey of a plastic bag in the ocean. We will also write information sheets about plastics.
Maths:  We use concrete resources, such a cubes, Numicon and counters to help us to develop strong foundations in maths before moving on to more abstract concepts. Our focus this term will be statistics, fractions and measurement.
Science: Our science lessons  link to our topic, so we will be looking at materials with a focus on plastics and their properties. We will also look at how materials can be changed including recycling and re-using. The children will  also continue to develop and understanding of the changing seasons

Please see our Curriculum letter for more detail on this exciting topic.

"We enjoy educational visits to the Heart of England forest each half term. This half term we will be

Home Learning
It would help your child if they read regularly at home. Please share the book your child brings home, but remember to read to them too . We will also be sending phonic cards home to Year 1 children.

They have a Spelling Test every Wednesday. Tests will always be based on the 'phonic focus' of the week. Tests are marked with the children, with new spellings handed out directly following this. Maths homework will be sent to Year 2 only.
