Great Alne Primary School
Online Safety
At Great Alne we use the renowned PSHE Jigsaw scheme.
'Jigsaw', as it is commonly known, is a comprehensive PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education programme that incorporates online safety as a key component. Here’s how it teaches online safety effectively:
...through an integrated curriculum approach
- Whole-School Strategy: Jigsaw integrates online safety into its broader PSHE curriculum, ensuring that pupils learn about it in various contexts rather than as a standalone topic.
- Developmentally Appropriate Content: Lessons are tailored to be age-appropriate, covering online safety in a way that resonates with pupils at different stages of their development.
...by running specific lessons on online safety
- Dedicated Units: The Jigsaw scheme includes specific units that focus on online safety, addressing issues such as cyberbullying, privacy, and the importance of consent in online interactions.
- Interactive Activities: Engaging activities, discussions, and role-plays help pupils understand the risks associated with online behaviour and how to navigate them safely.
...by promoting critical thinking
- Scenario-Based Learning: Pupils are presented with real-life scenarios involving online interactions, encouraging them to think critically about the choices they make and the consequences of those choices.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Lessons often involve problem-solving tasks where pupils must decide how to respond to various online situations, fostering their ability to handle challenges independently.
...through collaboration with parents and carers
- Parental Engagement: Jigsaw encourages schools to involve parents in their children’s learning about online safety, providing resources and guidance to help parents reinforce these lessons at home.
- Online Safety Class: We have an open 'Online-Safety Class' on Class Dojo so that parents can educate themselves on current online safety issues and how to support their children.
...we place emphasis on emotional wellbeing
- Building Resilience: The scheme promotes emotional literacy and resilience, helping pupils to feel confident in discussing their online experiences and seeking help if they encounter problems.
- Creating a Safe Environment: By fostering a safe and respectful classroom environment, Jigsaw encourages pupils to share their concerns about online safety without fear of judgement.
...through continuous assessment and reflection
- Feedback Mechanisms: Jigsaw includes tools for assessing pupils’ understanding of online safety concepts, allowing teachers to adapt lessons based on pupil needs and feedback.
- Reflection Activities: Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their learning, which reinforces their understanding of online safety principles and how to apply them in real life.
The Jigsaw scheme effectively teaches online safety by embedding it within a broader PSHE framework, using interactive and age-appropriate methods, and fostering collaboration with parents. This comprehensive approach ensures that pupils not only learn about online safety but also develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate the digital world safely.
